What We Know About Suicide

Every suicide is a tragedy that affects families, communities and has long-lasting effects on the people left behind. It is a complex health issue that no single solution can prevent. According to the latest data from the CDC and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs:

Nationally, the CDC estimates over 49,000 (general population) people died by suicide in 2022. This is 1 death every 11 minutes.

Suicide rates in 2022: Missouri 24.5,
National Veteran 18.4,
Missouri Veteran 42.6
(per 100,000).

Missouri Veteran suicides have decreased with ages 18-74 between 2021-2022, while the 75+ age group has slightly increased.

74.3% of Missouri Veteran suicides were by firearms, a slight decline between 2021-2022.

Each person who dies by suicide leaves behind an estimated 135 people who knew that person —
and the impact of suicide and the bereavement that follow.
